NEW YORK (AP) — Most drivers would pay $15 to enter Manhattan’s central business district under a plan released by New York officials Thursday. Officials say that in addition to funding needed transit improvements, congestion pricing will result in improved air quality and reduced traffic. Opponents include taxi drivers, who had pushed for a full exemption. Phil Murphy criticized the traffic mobility board's proposal after some news organizations reported on it Wednesday ahead of its official release. The MTA board will vote on the plan after a series of public hearings scheduled for February 2024.

London's famous black cabs will soon be available to ride through Uber , the ride-sharing company announced Tuesday. London's taxi drivers will be able to sign up for trip referrals through Uber starting Wednesday, and the service will go into effect in 2024. The news follows Uber's expansions into taxi offerings in Paris, Los Angeles and other major cities. More recently, in May, Uber partnered with Waymo to bring autonomous ride-hailing services to Phoenix, Arizona. Hackney carriages, also known as black cabs, are London's famously recognizable small black taxis.

Uber and Lyft agreed to pay a combined $328 million to settle allegations the ride-hailing companies unlawfully withheld wages from drivers and failed to provide mandatory paid sick leave in New York state, Attorney General Letitia James' office said Thursday. Uber will pay $290 million and Lyft will pay $38 million. The state AG's office said it's the largest wage-theft settlement it's won. The companies also agreed to ongoing changes in how they pay drivers and offer benefits in the Empire State. The minimum rate would apply from "dispatch to completion of the ride," according to a press release from the AG's office.

New York City's yellow taxis have been a symbol of the metropolis for decades. But taxi drivers only make up about 10% of the total driver landscape in the city — giving way to Uber and Lyft . In addition, to driving a taxi, drivers have to own or lease a medallion, which can cost a fortune. Prices subsequently tanked with the rise of Uber and Lyft which caused great anguish for drivers who owned their own medallion. Now, taxi drivers are fighting for space in the industry as they recover from the medallion crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.

But taxis have had to contend with a host of issues. Medallion prices were artificially inflated in the early 2010's due to predatory lending forcing many owner-operators into bankruptcy. The industry has also been overwhelmed by ride hailing services like Uber and Lyft. Today roughly 13,000 yellow taxis compete with about 80,000 ride-share drivers.

Targeted, full-length video ads are coming to Uber for the first time, The Wall Street Journal reported. Users will encounter them on Uber and Uber Eats' mobile apps, in cars, and on Drizly. Video ads will also be incorporated across Uber Eats and Drizly, an alcohol delivery service acquired by Uber for over $1 billion in 2021, the WSJ reported. On Uber Eats, ads will display while customers wait for their deliveries, and on Drizly, ads will play on search results pages. "We know where you are, we know where you are going to, we know what you have eaten."

The company is justifying its steep ad prices by pitching advertisers its first-party data that shows where people are and where they're going. Advertisers laid out why Uber's ads are so valuable, and how the company has been able to pull in their budgets. Uber's data-driven ad offering however isn't as compelling as what's offered by retail media competitors, like Walmart and Target. Uber has a new strategy to go after video ad budgetsUber also wants to corner a piece of the lucrative video advertising market. The tablet ad format is squarely aimed at video ad budgets.
CNN Business —The cost of a New York City taxi ride is expected to increase by nearly 23% by the end of 2022, marking the first taxi fare increase in a decade, according to a unanimous vote held Tuesday by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Additionally, the base rate for New York City cabs is expected to rise from $2.50 to $3.00, while rush hour surcharges will increase from $1 to $2.50. Gross income of TLC drivers is projected to increase by 33% due to the newly approved fare increases, which are expected to go into effect shortly before the end of this year. “Raising taxi fare rates and minimum pay for high-volume drivers is the right thing to do for our city. “I think part of it and part of our idea with increasing the taxi fare is that the financial compensation just isn’t there.
